Learning how to take good notes is one of the most important skills that you are
taught in school. This page will discuss two different note taking techniques as
well as general pointers for all techniques.

The Fabulous Five
 | Use a loose-leaf notebook, (i.e. a binder) . This makes it easier to take
out or add material.
|
 | At the end of the unit, put you notes in a marked folder or large bingers
which you keep in a safe place at home. Nothing is more tragic that to
see a student spill a whole years notes in a crowded corridor between
classes.
|
 | Date you notes and number the pages and record them in a table of
contents. You'll be extremely grateful in January that you started
doing it in September.
|
 | Write you name and home form at the top of each page. Lost notes are
often found but seldom returned because it is impossible to learn who wrote
them.
|
 | Don't ignore points that the teacher puts on the blackboard. Follow the
same organization in you notes. |

The Cornell System
There are five R's in the Cornell Note Taking Method - Record, Reduce,
Recite, Reflect and Review.
RECORD
Record class material on the larger right hand side of the page. Use
abbreviations and write on every second line. This will allow you to
make additions later.
REDUCE
After class, reduce notes to key words and write them in the Summary Column
in the left margin.
RECITE
Test yourself (out loud or silently) on the material by folding the page so
that only the key word summary is showing. Use the key words to cue
yourself. This way you have both oral and visual input to help you in
your recall.
REFLECT
Think about the new ideas presented and how they fit into
the unit of information you are studying. Comments and questions may
result from this process which will allow a better understanding of the
material.
*** In the first few weeks of a course be sure to check with
another student or the teacher to determine how accurate and complete your
notes are.
