As the IB syllabus has a distinctively international flavor, students read foreign literary works in translation as part of their English studies. This crucial "world literature" element promotes cultural understanding, tolerance and appreciation as well as broadening students' exposure to various genres of literature and allowing them to experiences the writings of group of important and distinguished authors whose works would otherwise be inaccessible. The works studied in the world literature section of the course range from nineteenth century Russian novels to twentieth century German drama, to South American epics of magic-realism. The English language works explored in the IB English courses expose students to works in a variety of genres from authors, poets ,and dramatists of diverse cultural backgrounds writing in time periods ranging from the renaissance to the present.
